5 Min Warning #9 - 19-6-24
Sailjuice’s Andy Rice is back from a sub-par performance at the Musto Skiff Nationals in Yorkshire, but PlanetSail’s Matt Sheahan is flying high at the Open Class gliding National Championships in the Cotswolds, when the weather allows, that is.
There’s been a lot of weather in the past week in the UK, as anyone who attempted the Round the Island Race last Saturday will tell you. Irvine Laidlaw’s multihull Highland Fling 18 took line honours in a heinously windy and wavy circumnavigation of the Isle of Wight, while Peter Morton’s TP52 Notorious took handicap victory and the Gold Roman Bowl.
Meanwhile in Barcelona, a sudden and catastrophic mast breakage for Alinghi Red Bull Racing raises a number of difficult questions, not just for the Swiss team but for all the America’s Cup participants...

Alinghi Red Bull Racing Dismasted
Переглядів 23 тис.День тому
Thursday 13 June was a punchy day in Barcelona with the breeze peaking at 22 knots….perfect for testing and training in top end conditions. But midway through what Alinghi Red Bull Racing Team later said had been a very productive session, drama struck as the Swiss boat was dismasted shortly after a bear away. Matt Sheahan reports. Well that’s a fancy boat that PlanetSail’s Matt Sheahan is standing next to by the Hamble River! Sailjuice’s Andy Rice has brief boat envy but is more pre-occupied with his upcoming trip to Yorkshire and a potential capsize-a-thon at the Musto Skiff National Championship. While generally the 5 Minute Warning tends to focus on the top end of the grand prix scene, this week Matt and Andy give a s...

With six months to go before the infamous single handed Vendée Globe Race around the world the focus is drawing in on the IMOCA fleet, both for spectators and the solo sailors themselves. And as the clock counts down there were two very important transatlantic races starting with the CIC Transat. Formerly the OSTAR, this is a race with a long and often brutal history. We take a look at what hap...

Of the six teams that signed up to the 37th America’s Cup cycle, four had sailed in the previous event in Auckland. Four teams that already knew how hard the task was going to be and four teams who came away from the last America’s Cup with pages of notes on how they would do things differently next time around. Anyone coming into the 37th Cup afresh would need to be playing a big game of catch...

This week, Sailjuice’s Andy Rice calls up from Turkey to update PlanetSail’s Matt Sheahan on the world of wingfoil racing. One of the big topics is lowest possible take-off windspeed for foiling, a common design challenge for all forms of foiling craft including the AC75s aiming at the next America’s Cup. Matt reports that the Kiwis have done some digital mapping of all the challengers’ new des...

Here’s what the first three AC75 Cup boats looked like on their special day. Of the many milestones that represent any America’s cycle, the launch of new boats is one of the most exciting. One by one, years of work, tens of thousands of man hours of design, build and fit out are revealed. After years of secrecy….there’s no hiding now. Be it sliding out through the team base doors, or dropping t...
American Magic launches America's Cup boat Patriot

Is this the slipperiest Cup boat in the fleet? There's plenty to suggest that American Magic's AC75 'Patriot' is the most refined aerodynamic package so far and if that's the case the team's new machine could be the lowest drag Cup boat out there. But why have the Americans decided to go down this route and be so obsessive about drag and at what cost? Matt Sheahan takes a look at the new Patriot.

yes, per jameslittlewood (what a terrible name to be given) below, the Cunningham may not have been eased quickly enough on the bearaway so the wire/rope in the luff pops and CRACK. I would like to the hear the onboard audio of that.

Upwind cunningham tension probably wasn’t released with mainsheet ease on bear away, pulling luff rope out of track below the spreader. No backstays or intermediate runners, the main effectively holds the mast up. Twang time.

    • @jamesfrankham7408

@@jameslittlewood7821 Dead right I reckon. Big bear-away at top mark, big ease of main sheet tension without easing cuno, entire rig load goes on to luff of sail and tears track off (you can see the main separating from the mast). Without the main taking the load, the only thing keeping the mast in column was the structure of the mast, so it snapped like a toothpick.
